Over at the ACLU site there's a fantastic blog encouraging marriage equality protesters to keep up their vitriol. Jeremy Hooper highlights how these arguments provide prime teaching moments. He discusses how their lies and immoral use of deceit can be shown in direct opposition to the "morality" they are trying to uphold. It's a brilliant argument. I'm totally with him here.
I remember a few years back when I went down to DC for the March for Women's Lives, there were very few protesters. There was one guy that stood on the side of the road and shouted archaic rhetoric through a megaphone. It was hysterically (can't resist using that word) amusing. "You women, we gave you the vote and look what you've done with it!" This is how I prefer the opposition. Bring on the tasteless, the media-hungry, the desperate using cartoons and inhuman caricatures. We don't need to make buffoons of you...you're already doing it for yourself.
It's the ones with board meetings and big money operations, the one's who know how to manipulate the wording on a referendum and, with political appointees, stack courts. These are the ones who are in the shadows, but truly need the spotlight.
h/t to Miriam at Feministing for pointing out the blogs at the ACLU site.
